SONG FOR THE WEEKEND – When I’m Small by Phantogram

Arguably the best song from this electro-rock duo’s 2010 debut album, ‘Eyelid Movies’, and still probably my favourite of theirs even after two more albums. Their particular combination of a hip-hop beat with electro synths and shoegaze vocals is a rare sound experience, but they compliment each other in a way that’s simply beautiful to listen to. Indie and hip-hop may not be two genres you would typically put together, but done like this it’s really something special. The mini wails on the chorus really add to the hypnotic, euphoric atmosphere imposed by the pair, as does the arcade-like background melody which runs throughout, overall giving the effect of organised confusion. One of those songs that you can just imagine listening to whilst cruising along the motorway at night.
