One of the top tunes from this South African musician’s fresh debut album, ‘La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful’. An intriguing mixture of subtle post-punk, leering soul and modern funk, the song makes for a chilled listen, filled with influences from traditional African music. He calls his style ‘noir-wave’, and is also influenced by Kanye West’s 2008 album ‘808s & Heartbreak’, and you can really hear similarities between ‘Down’ and ‘Love Lockdown’ once you know this. The song also carries a spiritual vibrancy, which is absent from far too many other artists’ music – in fact, I’ve only really heard it this strongly before in Deep Forest’s music. Petite Noir is very new to the music scene, but is often tipped as one of the ones to watch for 2016, and you can see why after listening to ‘Down’ and his other songs.
