UPCOMER: ISLAND APOLLO

Brilliant indie rock band out of LA whose fresh new single is extremely impressive and infectious. Produced by Eric Lilavois, who has worked with the likes of Saint Motel and Atlas Genius, it’s up to a high standard, and on listening you’d think they were an established, well-known band if you didn’t know otherwise. Very promising for their future music career – check them out before the world does.

SONG FOR THE WEEKEND – Can You Deal? by Bleached

These LA girls have wasted no time in getting new music out after their 2016 album ‘Welcome the Worms’. They’ve burst in 2017 with brand new single ‘Can You Deal?’, as feisty, funky and cool as ever, full of vintage vibes and ecstatic energy. The first song I’ve heard this year that really carries an essence of summer, so if you’re stuck in the miserable ever-lasting winter of Britain like me, this song should help to lift you out of it a bit.

BAND OF THE WEEK – OYSTER KIDS

Indie two-piece fresh out of Los Angeles, whose two singles have been beginning to catch the attention of music bloggers like us for the past few months now. They debuted with ‘Creepy’ last year, and its captivatingly mysterious atmosphere partnered with a characteristically indie pop build-up led to immediate likenesses being drawn between the duo and bands like Foster The People and Electric Guest. In fact, its dark tones almost make it seem like a 2016 version of ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ – the sort of edgy, hipster song that still becomes somewhat popular with the mainstream. More recently, Oyster Kids have followed ‘Creepy’ up with ‘Lips’ – more joyous-pop in comparison, yet still maintaining those shadowy undertones, confirming to listeners exactly what this band’s genre is about. Cryptic, enticing, and yet epically funky.

SMALL STARTUPS – LOLA RHODES

Singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, who produces some seriously stunning folk-pop influenced by a whole range of artists, including Kirk Franklin and The Beach Boys, to name a couple. Although she’s been making music for a few years now, her music career is really going to start to kick off in the New Year, with several releases planned including her single ‘Marina del Rey’ – available to pre-order now (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/marina-del-rey-single/id1063715895?ls=1). ‘Marina del Rey’ is a short, sweet and simple tune full of escalating harmonies and heartfelt truths, ultimately powered by beautiful piano and vocals, and promises truly great things for her future music. Any UK readers: this is exactly the kind of song you might expect to hear on the John Lewis Christmas adverts.

Lola currently performs in and around LA, and is hoping to have a single release concert there in Room5 sometime soon, so if you’re anywhere nearby, make sure to go check her out live!
