SONG FOR THE WEEKEND – Alive by The Temper Trap

One of the highlights from this panoramic pop group’s latest album, ‘Thick As Thieves’ – which has certainly been a long-awaited record by fans, with it being a whole four years since the band’s last album. ‘Alive’ is yet another epic feat by The Temper Trap, as they skilfully combine just the right kind of pop-rock sounds and reverbs that make it into an elevating, powerful song that you can sing along to, without letting it transcend into the bounds of cliché. A feat which other bands, e.g. U2, clearly do not always manage to master so well. Admittedly, we do still think ‘Sweet Disposition’ is still The Temper Trap’s greatest achievement (seriously timeless, isn’t it?), but ‘Alive’ is still an excellent tune and one you should definitely consider putting on at a party this weekend.

SONG FOR THE WEEKEND – A Little Piece by The Jezabels

Powerful, emotion-ridden song from this Australian quartet. Boasting their empowering approach to indie rock alongside impressive vocals of escalation, ‘A Little Piece’ may not be their newest song, but it is certainly one of their most memorable.  There’s something about the intricacies of the beginning guitar and endearing vocals and how they both lead up to an explosive chorus of wonder and pure indie character, that just makes ‘A Little Piece’ a complete beauty to listen to, no matter how many times you’ve already heard it. If these guys are a new discovery to you (then great, because believe it or not that is actually our main aim), I must also quickly mention one of their newer songs – ‘Come Alive’ – because it’s truly beautiful in its instrumental patterns and layering. Listen to ‘A Little Piece’ first, of course – the combination of the awe that Florence and the Machine’s songs hold alongside the complex indie of The Temper Trap makes for an epic listening experience.
